Cosatu to strike nationally over corruption

In Durban, a march is planned from the DinuZulu (Botha's Park) to the Durban City Hall to handover a memorandum.

THOUSANDS of members from the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) will embark on a national strike on Wednesday (27 September). The planned national shutdown by the labour federation comes following revelations made by the former Public Protector about scourge of corruption and the capture of key state institutions.

In Durban, a march is planned from the DinuZulu (Botha’s Park) to the Durban City Hall to handover a memorandum.

According to Parboo Sewpersad, acting spokesman for the Durban Metro Police around 3 000 people are expected.

“The march is set to get underway at 10am and end at 1pm, however these times are subject to change. I would urge residents to avoid the Durban CBD or find alternative routes should they need to travel to the city. We will be closely monitoring proceedings and one lane on Dr Pixley Kaseme (West Street) will be cordoned off. The march will begin at DinuZulu (Botha’s Park) near the DUT campus and will proceed to City Hall,” he said.

Cosatu national spokesman Sizwe Pamla said the latest scandal involving the disgraced auditing and consultancy firm KPMG is a stark reminder of the collusion between the private and public sector in swindling South Africans and destroying our economy and jobs.

“In order to promote and defend the interests of workers, the working class and the poor, this perilous situation must be addressed by mobilising against this predatory elite and pushing for processes that will ultimately dismantle their network. We shall be using the strike to push the President of the Republic of South Africa Cde Jacob Zuma to establish the Judicial Commission of Inquiry,” Pamla said.
