Urgent action needed over Briadene water, sewage leak

Durban North ward councillor, Shaun Ryley, told Northglen News the leak had also adversely affected residents of the informal settlement.

THE Ward Committee of ward 36 has urged the City to undertake urgent action to stop a persistent water leak where thousands of litres are lost over the course of a week. Last week, a Briardene business owner said he was concerned over a persistent water leak which floods his business on Acutt Avenue. The leak, he said, seems to be coming from the back of Briardene Informal Settlement which is directly behind the business.

The owner of the business said oftentimes besides water, there was raw sewage flowing into the yard making it hazardous for the workers.

Durban North ward councillor, Shaun Ryley, told Northglen News the leak had also adversely affected residents of the informal settlement.

“At the ward committee public meeting we made recommendations directed to head of Roads & Stormwater Maintenance Department as well as the Water and Sanitation Department urging them to take action. The road has completely washed away at the end of Briardene making it difficult for residents walking to and from the settlement.

“The positive development is the matter has been elevated to the highest level. I have requested the water department to investigate and formulate a rectification plan that can be implemented as a matter of urgency. The department has acknowledged that there is a major problem and have initiated action admitting that is is a major undertaking,” he said.
