Suspects arrested after Effingham shootout

The suspects' vehicle was stolen in a hijacking earlier this year and contained various house breaking implements.

TWO men have been arrested after they, and three accomplices, allegedly opened fire in the Greenwood Park area on Friday night. The suspects, who were driving a Nissan Sentra, were spotted by officers by members of the Greenwood Park SAPS who were on routine patrol on Park Station Road.

According to Marshall Security’s Kyle van Reenen, the incident occurred at about 8.30pm.

“The vehicle began driving at high speed through the Greenwood Park and Effingham area, before losing control on Matheran Road, veering off the road way and down an embankment coming to a rest on an open field. The suspects then jumped out of the vehicle brandishing pistols, opening fire on the police. Multiple gunshots were exchanged and a foot chase ensued, resulting in the arrest of one of the suspects.

“A description of the remaining four men was distributed to all vehicles in the area, as police and Marshall Security descended on the scene. A man matching the description of one of the suspects was spotted on Umhlangane Road by members of the Marshall Security Special Operations Team and was arrested on site.  With the assistance of the K9 unit, an extensive search of the surrounding areas was conducted, however the remaining three suspects are still at large,” he said.

Van Reenen added the suspects’ vehicle was stolen in a hijacking earlier this year and contained various house breaking implements.
