THE City of Prague played host to 70 deaf Miss and Mister finalists from all over the world at the Miss & Mister Deaf World and Europe and Asia, World Fashion show. Prestondale resident and Miss Deaf South Africa, Shelley Ferreira, represented South Africa taking part in a fashion show made up entirely of deaf models and designers.

Some of the judges on the panel were also deaf. The event aimed to empower individuals who were hard of hearing.

“It was incredible being part of the show. I met so many people from all over the world and what was amazing was we were able to communicate without any language barriers. Using sign language to speak to each other was great because it’s universal. The event was aimed at integrating the those with impaired hearing into society.

“I loved being part of the fashion show, one of my dresses was made by La Lucia resident, Aldine Dallas of Shweshwe Chic, and people absolutely loved it. It was an absolute honour being part of the event. I would love for South Africa to host a show like this and give a platform to deaf people to express themselves,” she said.
