Road rehabilitation assessments to begin in September
Assessments will be conducted during the day by trained and experienced road assessors travelling in clearly marked vehicles.
THE City will conduct a biennial visual assessment, planned from September to December. The three-month assessment will be carried out by the City’s Engineering Unit Roads Provision Department to ensure that paved roads remain in good condition.
Chairperson of the Human Settlements and Infrastructure Committee, Mondli Mthembu, said the assessment was necessary.
“To achieve sustainability on our road networks, we must ensure proper maintenance. Keeping our roads in good condition will also increase road safety,” he said.

The municipality’s paved road network, which is about 8 000 kilometres in extent, will be assessed by professional civil engineering consultants in accordance with national road assessment standards.
Roads Provision Department deputy head, Dave Thomas, said data obtained from the assessments is used to inform the municipality’s future road maintenance and rehabilitation needs.
“Assessments will be conducted during the day by trained and experienced road assessors travelling in clearly marked vehicles at speeds between 20 to 40 kilometres per hour. All road assessors will have identification tags indicating the necessary authority to conduct these assessments,” he explained.
