Foul smell emanates from Sea Cow Lake treatment plant

Members of the Ethekwini Fire and Rescue Services reported that there is a large amount of sludge smoldering at the plant.

THE foul odour that has been plaguing the north Durban community has been identified. According to Kyle van Reenen, investigations have revealed that there is currently a situation at a water treatment plant in the Sea Cow Lake area.

“Members of the Ethekwini Fire and Rescue Services reported that there is a large amount of sludge smoldering which they are currently attending to. They have indicated that due to environmental conditions such as wind direction, the smoke and odour may be noticeable over the area for the course of the day.

“At this stage the environmental impact of the smoke has yet to be measured, however a source on the scene advises that residents restrict prolonged exposure wherever possible and exercise caution with clothing on lines,” he said.
