N2 reopens after deadly shootout

Traffic around Durban was gridlocked with delays on all major routes.

THE N2 has been reopened following a high-speed chase and shootout on Friday afternoon. The shootout between police and a gang of heavily armed men has resulted in a three fatalities and two arrests.

The suspects, who were driving a white Mercedes-Benz, rammed officers off the freeway.

The incident unfolded just before the Queen Nandi Drive off-ramp when the police car and the Mercedes-Benz careened off the roadway, down the median, before colliding with a civilian vehicle driving southbound.

The driver, a woman in her 60s sustained moderate injuries. She was cut free with the Jaws of Life used by members of Rescue Care and Crisis Medical. The men are believed to be part of cash-in-transit syndicate.
