Fatima finish fifth at challenge

In their previous appearance at the inaugural tournament, Fatima also finished a well-earned fifth in 2011.

AFTER a five year break, Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School made their second appearance at the SPAR KZN School Girls Hockey Challenge Grand Finals where they ended off their superb efforts in fifth place. Overall, the defending champions, St Mary’s DSG, held on tightly to win the Grand Finals of the SPAR KZN School Girls’ Hockey Tournament, which took place on their hometurf this weekend (29 and 30 July).

In the playoff for fifth, they met the ‘giant slayers’, King Edward High School from Matatiele who appeared to have run out of steam.

Fatima netted an impressive four goals in their 30 minutes, with the first goal going in early and following those up towards the end of the game with three quick fire goals.

Fatima started their grand finals with a blasting of five goals to Wartburg Kirchdorf’s one. Their next game they met St Anne’s who have medalled four times in their six Grand Finals. The second game was less successful for the Durban North team, going down 3-0.

They pulled up their socks and absolutely out did themselves in their third game against defending champions, St Mary’s DSG, with the final whistle blowing with both teams having one goal on the score board. In their final pool game, Fatima took on travelling team, Ferrum High School from Newcastle and continuing their good form, netted three more goals with Ferrum not getting much of a show in in their opponent’s end.

In the final classifications, Fatima took on Grantleigh College in the second game on Sunday, and again, similar to the Ferrum game, found the back of the net three times with Grantleigh not really being able to penetrate the sterling Fatima defence.

In their previous appearance at the inaugural tournament, Fatima also finished a well-earned fifth in 2011.
