Intoxicated sangoma demands sacrifice before being jailed

The sangoma said the sacrifice was to appease the ancestors.

A SANGOMA who was allegedly arrested for drunken driving in Friday night’s roadblock in uMhlanga on the M41 asked for a sacrifice being being jailed. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the intoxicated traditional healer was one of 16 people arrested on the night.

Durban North SAPS spokesman, Capt Raymond Deokaran, said the comedic scene played out as officers were about to place the sangoma in the jail cells at the station.

“The sangoma demanded a cow sacrifice before being placed in the jail cells. We declined and placed him in the cell. We would like to reiterate our stance on drunk driving, there will be no excuses.

“On the same night we also had a man claim he was a soldier and was being deployed to the Democratic Republic of Congo on a combat mission. We will continue to host roadblocks to try to ensure safety on our roads,” Deokaran said.

More than 100 drivers have been arrested for drunk driving in roadblocks on the M4 and the M41 since the beginning of the year.
