LISTEN: Residents clean sections of Kensington, Broadway

The clean-up was prompted by residents who were unhappy with the amount of rubbish strewn around the Durban North area.

TWO residents and Durban North ward councillor Shaun Ryley took part in a clean-up of sections of Swapo Road (Broadway) and Adelaide Thambo (Kensington Drive) on Friday morning. Wayne Kerr and Dave Ward who began the clean-up, said they were fed-up with the litter debris as well as the general unkempt state of the Durban North area.

Wayne Kerr, who initially suggested the clean-up said it was a WhatsApp neighbourhood watch chat that spurred him into action.

“I’ve been a member of my community all my life and in recent times, the rubbish and dumping of plastic packets and broken bottles in the Broadway precinct and Durban North area in general has been disgraceful. When the topic came up in our WhatsApp chat group I decided to do something about it and suggested the clean-up. Despit there only being three of us we were able to collect a large amount of rubbish within a short period of time,” he said.

Just some of the rubbish bags collected on the day.

Durban North ward councillor, Shaun Ryley, had this to say about the clean-up:

Dave Ward said parts of the Durban North area were a disgrace.
