Gang holds up contractors, ransacks uMgeni Park home

The suspects loaded the stolen items into the homeowner's car before fleeing with the vehicle.

ARMED men held up building contractors before ransacking a home in uMgeni Park on Tuesday just before lunchtime. According to Blue Security’s community and media liaison officer, Andreas Mathios, the incident occurred at about 11.30am.

“A gang of four suspects driving a blue VW Golf arrived at the property and held up the contractors. They then got into the house stealing televisions, DVDs, jewellery, bottles of alcohol and the contents of a safe which they had forced open. The brazen suspects then fled using the homeowner’s vehicle,” he said.

Mathios advised homeowners to brief contractors to be security conscious when working on site.

“Contractors sometimes fall into a bad habit of leaving driveway gates and front doors  open for long periods of time once they have finished carrying their tools and building materials inside, leaving the property vulnerable to opportunistic criminals. Make sure that gates and doors are locked as soon as the workers are all safely on site,” Mathios said.
