Kingpin behind mall robberies arrested

It is believed the suspect was part of a gang that targeted jewellery and watch shops in areas that included uMhlanga and La Lucia.

POLICE have arrested a man they claim is the kingpin behind a number of mall robberies across the province. The suspect was arrested on Monday night in an intelligence driven operation by various police units in uMlazi. According to provincial SAPS spokesman, Brigadier Jay Naicker police launched an operation on Monday night after identifying two residences at AA section  and BB section in Umlazi, used as hideouts by the criminals.

“During the operation two suspects were arrested including the leader of a mall robbery gang. It is believed this gang targeted shops that sold jewellery and wrist watches. Police were able to recover wrist watches and expensive perfumes that were taken in some of the robberies.

“The main suspect is positively linked to at least three mall robberies while the second suspect was found in possession of goods taken during a fourth robbery. Both men who are in their early 30s, will appear in court soon,” he said.

This arrests follows a spate of mall robberies that have taken place within the greater Durban area in recent months.
