High speed chase, shootout on N2 leads to arrest

Police found an unlicensed firearm on one of the suspects who was arrested.

ONE person has been arrested after a hijacking led to a high speed chase and shootout on the N2. The suspect who was arrested was allegedly the driver of the vehicle and was shot in the shoulder by police. According to Kyle van Reenen of Marshall Security, the hijacking occurred at about 6.30pm in Stanger.

“Information received indicated that three suspects armed with firearms, hijacked a white Toyota HiAce. An alert was sent out over various emergency networks including Emergency Control South Africa and with reports of the vehicle being seen traveling towards the N2. Big Show Towing reported a positive sighting of the vehicle passing through the Tongaat Toll gate and authorities began pursuing the vehicle.

“Marshall Security’s Special Operations Team were activated to assist and the vehicle was pursued at high speed on the national highway. A shootout ensued between suspects and authorities and the vehicle was finally brought to a stop by the SAPS in the vicinity of the Queen Nandi Drive off ramp. The driver of the vehicle sustained a gun shot wound to his shoulder and was apprehended by members of the SAPS,” he said.

Two other suspects who were in the vehicle fled on foot into nearby dense bushes and evaded arrest despite an extensive search by the K9 unit.

“The wounded suspect was attended to on scene by paramedics before being taken under police guard to a nearby hospital for further care. He was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm,” Van Reenen said.
