uMhlanga councillor’s mother robbed

The man pretended to be handing out pamphlets before taking her phone.

UMHLANGA ward councillor Heinz de Boer’s mother was robbed of her cell phone by a man pretending to ask for a glass of water on Wednesday last week. The incident unfolded at an office in eMdloti on North Beach Road.

“He came in pretending to be distributing pamphlets and approached my mother who is at the front of the office. He asked for water and while she had her back to him, he pocketed her cell phone and walked away. It’s incredibly annoying and rather unfortunate. I’ve heard about cases like this where guys pretending to distribute pamphlets are distracting unsuspecting victims and stealing phones and anything of value left that is easy to pocket,” he said.

In November last year, police warned of two men pretending to sell CDs and DVDs and handing out pamphlets targeting businesses in uMhlanga.
