Diarise Saturday, 17 June when the second International Jazz Extravaganza (IJE) returns to Durban once more.

FROM the big-band sounds of swing to the freedom of avant-garde and everything in between and beyond, jazz-lovers, diarise Saturday, June 17 when the second International Jazz Extravaganza (IJE) returns to Durban once more. A star-studded line-up includes award winning Jamaican-American classic, Monty Alexander Kurt Elling, Nduduzo Makhathini, and Thandi Ntuli who tells us about her life as a jazz artist.

What things don’t you like doing, name two.

Washing dishes and carrying my keyboard.

Tell us about a time when things didn’t go the way you wanted?

Many times. When I launched my album, The Offering, although the CD printers said the CDs would be ready on the launch day, they called midweek and changed to the few days after my launch. Nightmare.

What do you think about when you are alone in your car?
My life dreams usually, which because I love what I do can also be work related dreams.

What’s your strongest memory of your childhood?
I’ve got many. I remember every year end my father used to bring his choir that he conducted to a thanksgiving party we would have. We invited the neighbours and friends, had a priest come over to say mass and then partied the night away….no deejay, just a choir singing all night.

What do you dislike about South Africa?
The lack of empathy in our society for people of different backgrounds.

What makes you angry?
Disrespect. To me, to others even when I see someone being disrespectful to another person it ticks me off. Especially when people disrespect you because of social status.

Besides your job, what are you most passionate about?
Yoga. I started practicing in 2015 and love it. I also am passionate about other dreams that speak to my desire to serve in my community and uplift through my other gifts.

Name one misconception you think people have about you?
I think because I’m usually cheerful and find it easy to talk to people, people don’t know how often I get frightened in situations… I often throw myself in the deep and then panic internally with a cheerful smile.
