Police warns of remote jammers operating in the area

Two men who were arrested on Monday were found in possession of a remote jamming device.

DURBAN North SAPS has warned residents not to be complacent by leaving items in their vehicles. This comes after the arrest of two men who were found in possession of a jamming device on Monday. It’s believed the men were targeting cars on Swapo (Broadway) Road.

This month alone the station has recorded more than 30 cases of thefts out of motor vehicles.

Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the station, said despite the arrest, people still needed to be vigilant.

“Residents still need to be aware of their belongings. Items such as laptops, cameras, and phones are what the suspects most often look for. I urge residents to double-check they have locked their cars and not to leave valuables in their cars,” he said.

In Monday’s incident, Kyle van Reenen of Marshall Security confirmed two suspects were arrested after a high speed chase which ended on Goble Road.

“Our reaction officer noticed a suspicious metallic green Mazda with no number plates. As he drew closer to the car, he noticed the two men were standing next to another car in the parking bay trying to open its doors,” he said.

Van Reenen said that once the suspects saw the security officer, they jumped into the Mazda and sped off toward Kenneth Kaunda Road.

“A high speed chase ensued through Umgeni Park onto Chris Hani (North Coast) Road, as the suspects weaved dangerously through traffic. They were eventually arrested on Smiso Nkwanyana (Goble Road). They were also found to be in possession of several licence plates,” he said.
