Man charged with drunken driving after Virginia crash

There have been renewed calls for speed calming at the bottom of Mackeurtan Avenue as you enter the traffic circle.

A MAN has been charged for drunken driving after crashing his vehicle into the rockery display at Virginia Circle. The accident occurred on Friday night. According to Marshall Security’s Kyle van Reenen, the vehicle crashed into the rockery display before landing on its roof.

Durban North SAPS spokesman, Capt Raymond Deokaran, confirmed a case had been opened.

“At this stage we can confirm the driver of the vehicle was charged for drunken driving and reckless and negligent driving,” he said.

There have been renewed calls for speed calming at the bottom of Mackeurtan Avenue after the 13th accident at the Virginia traffic circle. One of the frequent casualties, is a light pole on the edge of the traffic circle. Durban North ward councillor, Shaun Ryley said speed humps were the only solution.

He added the speed limit on the residential road was 60km/h but motorists were continuously flouting the rules.

“I feel speed humps are the answer to the problem. A lot of the time, motorists misjudge how much time they have when they enter the circle and they speed to the end of it only to realise they’ve made a serious blunder, by then it’s too late,” he said.
