UKZN widens investigation in med school fraud ring

A syndicate that has been responsible for selling admission spaces at the University were granted bail on Monday.

MANAGEMENT at the University of KwaZulu-Natal are working on identifying accomplices and beneficiaries of those involved in a fraud ring which saw three people being arrested by the Hawks for allegedly selling places at UKZN’s Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine. One of those arrested included a 54-year-old Somerset Park woman.

Dr Albert van Jaarsveld, vice-chancellor and principal, welcomed the arrests of a syndicate that has been responsible for selling admission spaces at the University.

“The next phase of the operation will be to identify accomplices and beneficiaries of these illegal acts. Parents, staff and students with knowledge of these illegal activities are encouraged to come forward with information. Any persons found to have participated and/or benefited from this illegal practice will face criminal prosecution.

“An internal investigation by KPMG identified certain irregularities occurring within our systems. The anomalies were immediately rectified. We have since conducted an audit of all of our processes to ensure the integrity of our internal control systems. The University continues to be committed to high standards of ethical behaviour, integrity and upholding the rule of law. Acts of fraud, bribery and other corrupt behaviour will not be tolerated in any way or form and offenders will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” van Jaarsveld said.

The suspects appeared in court on Monday and were released on bail of R40 000.
