Table top speed humps a possibility for uMhlanga

The areas around Gateway, the New-Town Centre and parts of Preston Drive may be set for changes says local councillor.

THE option of table top speed humps for Gateway and the New-Town Centre is a serious possibility. That’s according to uMhlanga ward councillor, Heinz de Boer, who last week met with members of the eThekwini Traffic Authority (ETA). This in response to the closure of Millennium Boulevard after several residents and businesses in the area raised their concern about speeding on the busy road. In February, the City closed the road for traffic monitoring.

De Boer said according to the study, the traffic circle on the road had seen 300 accidents in six years.

“It has the highest accident rate at a traffic circle in Durban. In one of the accidents on this stretch, a car was clocked doing 105 km/h. The study also found the closure had reduced speeding on this particular stretch by 16 per cent,” he said.

De Boer said the option of table top speed humps like those in uMhlanga village could be an option in the precinct.

“It’s a positive step made by the ETA. They are looking at making the area around Gateway, the New-Town Centre and parts of Preston Drive more pedestrian friendly. There has also been reports of drag racing in the new-town centre which is another area of concern,” he said. “It’s still too early to say whether it is definitely going to happen but there is serious consideration that the table top speed humps would be considered.”
