Woman tries to escape fire, falls to her death

Six other people were injured after a fire broke out in Cornubia on Thursday.

A FIRE that broke out last night in the Cornubia housing estate has claimed the life of one of the residents.

The woman fell to her death after jumping from an upstairs window. She was trying to escape the fire that had engulfed the ground floor of the apartment. Seven people were in the house at the time when it caught alight. The other six were injured.

“Three children managed to escape through the back door while the rest of the family were trapped on the first floor. The fire spread rapidly through the home,” said Prem Balram, director of Reaction Unit South Africa.

He said a response unit was called out at about 10:40pm to the scene. Balram added, “Several ambulance services as well as the eThekwini Fire and Rescue Services and SAPS were already on-scene.”

Two other people suffered fractures to their legs, after they also jumped through a bedroom window. Neighbours managed to save a five-year-old girl by using a ladder. She was the last remaining person in the house, Balram said.

“The child suffered severe burns to her face after the fire spread to the upper level of the home. The injured were stabilised on scene before being transported to hospital,” he added.
