Support PACT’s pawsome initiative

The Doggy walk and family fun day will be held on Saturday, 6 May at the La Lucia Mall park.

IT is said that the heart of a volunteer is not measured in size, but by the depth of the commitment to make a difference in the lives of others. This is certainly true for local resident, Deshnee Govender, a volunteer for the Phoenix Animal Care and Treatment (PACT). The 29-year-old, with the help of other volunteers will be hosting an event in aid of the NPO, which is currently in debt.

“I’ve always had a passion for animals, especially dogs. My dog Ringo, was my life, he inspired me to want to give back and help out. Animals are loyal and always there for you. They give you unconditional love and that’s something that is also true of dogs. I recently joined Neeri (Naidoo), who started PACT and it’s opened my eyes to the cruelties animals face, but it’s also inspired hope for the happy endings that often occur because of the intervention of the NPO. Right now, the situation is dire in that PACT is in more than R200 000 of debt.

“A few of the volunteers decided to get behind this initiative to raise awareness and help raise funds for the organisation. I know this event will help us save many more lives through the people’s support and love,” she said.

Govender, who has planned the three kilometre route that dogs and their owners will take, said she hoped people would support the event.

“There’s going to be several dogs up for adoption on the day and we’d love for them to go to good homes, something the North Durban community are really good at. We just want as many people, and their dogs, to come out and support the event. PACT is totally reliant on the public, and the response has been great so far but we’d love to keep bringing the vet bills down. There will also be discounted micro-chipping on the day,” she said.
