Date set for showdown
Tuesday, 18 April at 2pm is when the president will face a vote of no confidence.
A DATE has been set for a showdown in Parliament over the removal of Jacob Zuma from the presidency. The debate in the National Assembly has been scheduled for Tuesday, 18 April at 2pm.
On Monday, 3 April, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Baleke Mbeta, confirmed that she had received opposition parties’ letters requesting an urgent scheduling for a motion of no confidence in the president. The Speaker then said that she would follow the necessary steps.
“The rules enjoin the Speaker to consult with the Leader of Government Business, who is the Deputy President of the Republic, and the Chief Whip of the Majority Party in her consideration of such Motion,” Parliament said in a statement on Wednesday.
During the week, three of the ANC’s top brass apologised for their public criticism of Zuma’s decision to reshuffle the cabinet. Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa – whom the speaker was required to consult with – was one of the three National Working Committee members who had to apologise.
Even before the debate, it has been reported that the ANC caucus will vote to reject the motion on April 18.
