Phenomenal response to blood shortage at Durban North clinic

121 people have donated blood since the call for more donors at the centre.

THE Durban North blood donor clinic situated at Kensington Square has thanked the North Durban community after their phenomenal response to a blood shortage. Since Monday night, when a message saying the clinic would close its doors for not meeting their monthly target, the centre has seen more than 145 people visit to donate blood.

Of that amount, 121 people have successfully donated. Sister Jane Groom, clinic supervisor said she was bouyed by the response from residents and encouraged more to donate in this critical time.

“We’d like to thank all those who have come out and supported the clinic. We have almost reached our monthly target which is great. We’ve been extremely quiet until this week. We hope more people continue to donate blood as we enter the school holidays,” she said.

Her thoughts were echoed by Dennis Ngongoma, public relations practitioner at the South African National Blood Service (SANBS).

“We are extremely pleased by the community of Durban North and uMhlanga’s response. The blood stock levels in KZN are now at 1.1 days so it is critical we get as many people donating as possible. We had a great show of support at a blood drive coordinated by Our Lady of Fatima earlier this week,” he said.
