La Lucia Minstrels hit the right notes

The minstrels, who have become a fixture of the area, share their story on their humble beginnings.

FOR many years, Gordon Timm and Raymond Francis have kept patrons of La Lucia Mall entertained with their eclectic brand of music. The duo, known as the La Lucia Minstrels, have been playing together for more than 20 years.

Francis, who comes from a musical family, said he learned to play the guitar by learning from his uncle.

“I don’t know how to read music; I just know how to play. My uncle and my family influenced the path I’d take in life. I remember, I was about six years old when I started and the music just grabbed me. I used to play with my brother and then Eddie who had been with me for many years at the mall. Sadly, both are late now and I know they are listening to us up in heaven and playing along,” the Phoenix resident said

The Minstrels are un-missable with their colourful outfits, white hats and unmistakable sound, similar to the Kaapse Klopse, a Cape Town Minstrel festival.

“I’d just like to thank the management and the patrons of the mall. They have been fantastic to us. They make us love our jobs even more,” Francis enthused.

Gordon, echoed his musical colleague’s sentiments.

“I don’t think I’d be able to play with anyone else. We are both passionate about our music and being able to share that with people from all over is a blessing and a honour,” he said.
