R1.3 billion development coming to Umhlanga

Construction on the Umhlanga Arch is expected to start later this year and be completed by mid-2020.

ANOTHER massive development project is expected to get underway later this year in uMhlanga. The R1.3 billion Umhlanga Arch was launched on Tuesday, 28 February at the Oyster Box Hotel. The project is being developed by the Multiply Group, a Durban-based global investment company. The development is slated to become an iconic feature of uMhlanga’s prestigious Ridgeside skyline with the building’s unique arch shape gazing out over the Durban coastline.
The Umhlanga Arch will be a residential and mixed-use space, with upmarket offices, first-class retail and hotel, and contemporary apartments. The developers say that 80 per cent of the residential component has already been sold. It has also attracted R350 million in foreign investment to the region.
Terry Rosenberg, Chairman of The Multiply Group said about the development, “Umhlanga Arch is going to be a place where you can live a full, productive day without having to venture from your address. Our vision for this development was to create a lifestyle for emerging entrepreneurs, serious business people who are trying to establish a balanced home/work lifestyle, and those individuals who frequent this area and aspire to live within it.”

The Multiply Group are collaborating with Tongaat Hulett on the billion-rand project, as a part of the agricultural-come-property company’s Socio-Economic, Sustainability and Innovation Programme (SSIP). The SSIP was started by Tongaat Hulett in 2014, with the key purpose of facilitating and creating local, community-based social and economic transformation across the full value-chain of property development. Sithembiso Mthembu, Tongaat Hulett’s Executive Head of Development, said, “While the SSIP is still in its infancy, in just the area of job placements alone, we have successfully made over 2000 placements in the last 12 months.”

The total site area of the Umhlanga Arch will be 45 000 square metres and construction is expected to be completed by the middle of 2020. The arch will be built on the corner of Lighthouse Drive and Ncondo Place, opposite the Umhlanga Business Centre.
