Talk Sign’s sticker day coming up in March
"Just learn how to say 'hello, my name is' or 'how are you', in Sign language," says Alice Leah, Talk Sign's campaign manager.
TALK Sign this March with the fourth annual Talk Sign campaign in full swing. The KZN Blind and Deaf Society are encouraging people to communicate with people who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing in Sign language.
“The primary goal of the Talk Sign campaign is to popularise Sign language – to make it more accessible to people that are hearing. So that when you meet somebody who is Deaf you’re able to communicate on a very basic level. Just learn how to say ‘hello, my name is’, ‘how are you’, ‘let’s meet for coffee’, et cetera,” said the campaign’s manager, Alice Leah.
March 3 is World Hearing Day and March 10 is Talk Sign’s Sticker Day. On March 10 Talk Sign stickers will be on sale at all Chateau Gateaux stores nationwide. The proceeds from the sticker sales will go toward Deaf training and job creation where people who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing will be given job skills training and helped to find work.
Since the launch of the Talk Sign campaign in 2014, the KZN Blind and Deaf Society have aimed to use their efforts to popularise Sign language and make it South Africa’s 12th official language. According to the Society’s president, former Constitutional Court Justice Zak Yacoob, ‘’It is a human right of every person who is Deaf to be able to communicate – to understand others and to be understood.’’
