Residents tackle beach clean-up
In all, more than 300 bags of rubbish was collected by volunteers.
THE overcast weather could not deter volunteers from doing their bit for the environment on Saturday at the #CleanBlueLagoon clean-up around the uMngeni River mouth. Dale Johnson, one of the organisers of the event said the rains had once again flushed rubbish into the mouth of the river.
“It is very concerning to see this amount of rubbish here, but it won’t deter us, we will continue to fight to keep our rivers and beaches litter free. I’d love to see more people involved of course but the commitment from the volunteers today has been fantastic. The bigger aspect of this is keeping our beaches and rivers clean. What is pleasing is seeing so many young people join in,” Johnson said.

Last year volunteers collected more than two tons of rubbish, around 80 per cent of which is plastic.
