Six charged in Umhlanga Rocks Drive roadblock

The daytime operations are part of the Durban North SAPS visible policing and crime prevention strategies for the year ahead.

DURBAN North SAPS crime prevention unit held a cordon and search on Umhlanga Rocks Drive on Thursday afternoon. The purpose of the 45-minute operation was to check for suspicious drivers. Six drivers were fined for breaking several traffic laws.

Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the SAPS, said the station was concentrating on suspicious vehicles.

“We’ve had a lot of car thefts during the day as well as thefts out of motor vehicles. We are searching for suspicious vehicles and during our operation we also found drivers breaking the law. This is also part of our visible policing and crime prevention for the year ahead. There will be more daylight operations such as this on different roads in the area,” he said.

One of the drivers was also fined R500 for not wearing a seatbelt while five others were fined for not having valid licenses and driving without a license.

Earlier this month a driver threatened the station with a lawsuit after he was stopped in an operation on Swapo Road (Broadway).
