Gateway watch store robbed by armed men

The suspects held up one of the guards at knife-point before robbing store.

A GATEWAY watch store was robbed by a group of armed men on Monday night. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North police station, officers and security from the mall reviewed footage of the robbery captured on CCTV footage this morning.  The incident occurred at about 10.30pm.

“The suspects walked into the mall. One of the suspects held up a knife to one of the security guards on site. They then smashed the windows of the store and began smashing the glass of several of the displays. The suspects took the most expensive watches from the shop before fleeing the scene. We believe they parked their getaway car outside the mall. It is unknown how much was taken in the robbery,” he said.

Deokaran added it was unclear if the men involved in the robbery were the same suspects who robbed a La Lucia Mall watch store in December.

Gateway’s marketing manager, Michelle Shelley, confirmed that a robbery took place.

“We can confirm that a robbery took place at a jewellery store within the centre on 9 January. The suspects removed an undisclosed amount of merchandise, before fleeing the mall. The incident is currently under investigation by the SAPS. No injuries were sustained. Gateway Theatre of Shopping would like to thank all role players for their quick response and support,” she said.
