Man punched repeatedly in uMhlanga mugging

The man was robbed by two men in a Hyundai who threatened him in the incident.

POLICE are investigating a case of a mugging on Pearl Drive in uMhlanga. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning confirmed Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS. The pedestrian was also assaulted by the thieves.

“The man was on his phone when he noticed a Hyundai van pass by him. He noticed two occupants in the car, the vehicle stopped and the driver began reversing to where he stood. The victim put his cell phone in his pocket sensing something was not right. One of the men then threatened the victim to hand over his phone.

“As he handed it to one of the suspects, the driver began to drive away, the victim grabbed hold of the door and tried to get his phone back. The suspect in the passenger seat punched him several times until he eventually let go of the door while the car was in motion,” he said.

Deokaran said last year opportunistic criminals were targeting people in the area using a similar modus operandi.

“They ask for directions and then try and snatch phones out of hands or other valuables. We are not sure if it is the same suspects, but we are investigating the possibility,” she said.
