TAFTA, feeding 1 800 at 22 Christmas lunches

The festive campaign was launched with the aim of making Christmas special for hundreds of elderly folk throughout Durban who would ordinarily have very little to look forward to.

EVERY year, hundreds of senior citizens at TAFTA- The Association for the Aged– prepare to spend Christmas without their families, instead they will rely on the company of staff and other residents for a sense of belonging.  But in an effort to bring some much-needed festive joy to its residents, TAFTA launched its annual festive lunch campaign, which brings the elderly folk together to enjoy a traditional festive celebration.

“The festive season is a difficult period for many of our residents because it is often a reminder of fond memories and being without their loved ones. TAFTA makes every effort to ensure that these special people do not feel alone,” said TAFTA CEO, Margie Smith.

Through the initiative, sponsors and donors are encouraged to provide the gift of hope by donating towards a seat for a senior citizen to enjoy a scrumptious festive lunch. A donation towards a festive meal affords residents a day of chatter, laughter, music, dancing, a delicious meal with friends and above all a sense of belonging.

Donors have the choice to contribute to a lunch for as many residents as they wish including tables of four, six or 10 guests.   Along with their contribution, each donor will be given the opportunity to write a personal message on a place card addressed to the recipient at the table setting.

Through public generosity, the organisation aims to host 1 800 senior citizens at 22 lunches throughout the city to ensure that no one eats alone this Christmas.

“This simple gesture means so much to our residents. It not only allows them to feel included and share in the joy of the season, but is a reminder that they are being thought of and cared for. It is extremely rewarding to see the sheer joy that these lunches bring,” said Smith. To donate to this initiative that runs until Christmas day visit www.tafta.org.za.
