Avoca Hills nurse wants to adopt abandoned baby

The two-day old baby boy was left in a Westville taxi.

AN Avoca Hills nurse, who found an abandoned baby boy in a Westville taxi yesterday, said she wants to adopt the infant.

Zokuthula Ngcobo, a nurse at Life Westville Hospital, was on her way from work when she heard the baby’s cries. Looking under her seat, she found the tiny baby whose eyes were swollen from crying. She believed that he was hungry as he was sucking on his hands.

The baby was found with a note, written in isiZulu, stapled to his clothing. In the note, the infant’s mother apologised to him for abandoning him.

The note read: “I apologise for what I did, please forgive me. There is nothing I can do. The father is denying the baby. I don’t have an ID to apply for a grant because I left it at home in the rural area. Please take good care of the baby or send it to the police.”

Ngcobo took the baby to the trauma unit at Life Westville Hospital where he was examined by a doctor and fed. He was later taken to Addington Hospital.

Police are investigating a case of child abandonment. Spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala added that the matter has been handed over to Westville SAPS.
