Fishermen robbed on Glenashley Beach

Fisherman robbed of rods, bait and tackle bag and handgun.

TWO fishermen were held up at knife-point on Monday night on the beach near The Promenade. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the incident occurred at about 7.30pm. One of the fishermen, who had a firearm, was robbed of his weapon and other equipment.

“The duo were on the beach when they spotted two men walking towards them. The suspects asked for a light for cigarette and then walked off in the direction of Virginia Airport. About 10 minutes later, the suspects came back armed with a knife. They took bags belonging to the fishermen which included their wallets.

“They made off with one of the angler’s weapons, a handgun, and even took the bait, fishing rods and reels from them. The men then fled on foot in an unknown direction,” he said.

This was the second armed robbery of the night, an hour after this incident a pedestrian was mugged on Umhlanga Rocks Drive near Ilala Ridge. According to Marshall Security’s Kyle van Reenen, the suspects were also armed with a knife.

“They robbed him at knife point and then fled into the bushes, towards La Lucia. They took the men’s shopping which included clothing and his phone, which is not enabled for tracking,” he said.
