Black Friday shoplifters arrested at Gateway

One of the thieves had tucked three bottles of vodka under his shirt.

WHILE Black Friday presented shoppers with an opportunity to buy items at massively discounted prices, criminals also tried to make use of the opportunity, with a little less success. Two shoplifters were arrested by mall security and handed over to the Durban North SAPS after trying to steal alcohol from two retail stores at Gateway Theatre of Shopping.

According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, one of the suspects tried to hide three bottles of vodka under his shirt.

“One of the guards heard the clink of glass bottles and when he questioned the suspect, he handed over three bottles of Cruz Vodka which he had concealed under his clothes. Another suspect was arrested with three bottles of Johnny Walker Red. They were just two cases of shoplifting recorded on the day. We want to warn people that even though some may view stealing as a minor misdemeanor, it is a crime,” he said.

According to police statistics, retailers nationally lose between R2-billion and R3-billion through shoplifting every year.
