Car theft syndicate targets Toyotas

Owners of the Toyota Hilux and Fortuner vehicles are urged to be cautious after five vehicles were stolen in the last two days.

THERE has been a spike in the number of car thefts in and around Durban in the past week and criminals are targeting Toyota Hilux and Fortuner vehicles. Sunningdale Neighbourhood Watch and Marshall Security member, Tyron Powell, has warned owners of these makes of vehicles to be vigilant and extra cautious about where they park their cars. Last night, a Toyota Hilux, was stolen from Medigate Road in uMhlanga.

“We believe a syndicate may be operating in the area. We’ve seen a number of cases throughout Durban. More than five thefts occurred in the last two days. The vehicle used in the theft of the Hilux in uMhlanga was later spotted in a similar theft in Pietermaritzburg. Most of the cases of theft have been reported outside residents’ homes and on the streets.

“One of the deterrents is to use an outdoor beam around your car, which is a very effective way to combat car theft. If it is possible to lock your vehicle behind a garage door, that is also advisable. Try and park the vehicle behind locked gates,” he said.
