Diabetes labelled the ‘silent killer’

Worldwide, 200 children develop diabetese every day.

ONE person dies from diabetes complications every six seconds. That’s according to the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organisation.

On 14 November, Diabetes Day will be commemorated worldwide and this year’s theme is, Eyes on diabetes. The aim is to encourage diabetic patients to ensure early diagnoses of Type 2 diabetes and to  reduce their risk of serious complications.

There are currently 415 million people worldwide with diabetes, as opposed to 14 million with cancer and 35 million who are HIV positive. Every eight seconds, two people develop diabetes and the International Diabetes Federation estimates that there will be 592 million people with diabetes by 2035.

Worldwide, 200 children develop diabetes every day. However, the fastest growing group of Type 2’s is the 35-50 age group. The federation however says that up to 80 per cent of Type 2 diabetes is preventable by adopting a healthy diet and increasing physical activity.

Local non-profit organisation, Diabetes SA is hosting a walk on 13 November to raise awareness about diabetes that they have labelled the ‘silent killer’.

Participants of the walk can get tested, share their success stories and help to educate the public about diabetes, which is reaching epidemic proportions globally. The walk will take place at the Amphitheatre on the Lower Marine Parade, Bay of Plenty. For more information, contact 031 201 2169.
