Two drown in freak accident at Virginia Beach

Emergency services tried to revive one of the victims, but he was later declared dead at the scene.

TWO fishermen have reportedly drowned during a freak accident at Virginia Beach on Sunday.
According to Kyle van Reenen, of Marshall Security, emergency services were dispatched to the scene shortly before 2pm.

“On arrival, an adult male approximately 35 years of age was found in visible distress in the ocean about one kilometre out at sea from the Virginia Beach pier. Two of our team members immediately reacted, diving into the water and swimming out to save the man,” he said.

When the rescuers finally reached the shore they found that that the man had gone into cardiac arrest, added van Reenen.

In an effort to revive the man, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was done for over 40 minutes, however, the he was declared dead at the scene.

The body of the second victim, who was estimated to be in his late 20s, later washed up on the shore.

“Eyewitness reports suggest that the men were fishing off the pier when the younger man was washed out to sea by the rising tide. The second man then dived in, in an attempt to save him,” said Van Reenen.
