Doctor arrested for drunk driving in eMdloti roadblock

A total of 25 other drivers were charged for various traffic offenses.

A DOCTOR was among 26 people arrested in a roadblock on the M4 near eMdloti this morning. The roadblock was held by the Durban North SAPS and the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and saw more than 140 vehicles stopped. The doctor was arrested for drunken driving while the other motorists were fined for unlicensed vehicles and driving without a license.

Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS said the operation was to try and catch criminals who were targeting eMdloti.

“We’ve had information that the criminals targeting the area were identifying homes during the day. There has also been a spate of theft-out-of motor vehicles so we were looking for anything suspicious. We stopped 150 motorists with many motorists again berating officers for causing traffic congestion on the M4. However, this roadblock is part of an ongoing operation to arrest the criminals involved in the thefts.

“We fined 25 motorists for a range of offenses including driving without a license, driving with an expired license and driving unroadworthy vehicles. A doctor was arrested for drunk driving during the operation which began just after 11am,” he said.

Deokaran warned more roadblocks would take place leading up to the end of the year.
