Mvoti Watch grows in strength

The watch plans to install the seventh security hut in Girvan Road in the near future.

THE Mvoti Neighbourhood Watch is aiming to sign up 80 per cent of the 340 residents in the area this year.

The precinct covers 16 roads including; Melrose Place, Melrose Avenue, Blackburn Road, Haleric Road, Hypathia Avenue, Kingston Road, Station Ridge Road, Douglas Road, Haig Road, Dell Road, Heronmere Road, Belverdere Road, Firth Road, Girvan Avenue, Northview Road and Delville Road. All the committee asks for is R240 a year which goes towards securing the area.

“In the past most of the money raised has been spent on fencing and installing security huts at key locations,” said chairman, Grant Cockburn.

“The plan is to have CCTV cameras installed on all huts depending on how much money is raised from subs. This way we will have a 24 hour view of traffic and pedestrian movements into our neighbourhood. The security huts have all been installed in key locations where traffic is high and at intersections. The huts will soon have LED lighting installed which will assist by making them more visible to every person entering our area,” he said.

Cockburn also highlighted that they have a dedicated team of patrol members who sacrifice their time to patrol during the night. Not only do they give up their time but they use their own vehicles and petrol in an effort to cover the area a number of times during their shift.

“Not every resident wants to patrol and we appreciated that. Joining the neighbourhood watch does not mean you have to patrol,” he explained.

Communication is extremely important in the watch, he added, saying residents are encouraged to report anything suspicious. The watch plans to install the seventh security hut in Girvan Road in the near future.
