The photographer is offering a R10 000 reward for information leading to the arrests of the thieves.

CAMERA equipment belonging to a Cape Town photographer and filmaker was stolen at King Shaka Airport. Ian Badenhorst is offering a reward of R10 000 for any information leading to the arrest of the suspects.

Badenhorst had arrived in Durban on Friday to photograph a wedding in the Midlands taking place on Saturday. He was reportedly at a car rental agency situated in the airport precinct and had his bags in an airport trolley. He turned to pay at a car hire counter and was walking to his car when he noticed his equipment was stolen.

“There is a R10 000 reward that might lead to any arrests. Please share as this is a syndicate working at the airport here and the guys must get caught. They dress like normal guys and follow you from the airport. We got the guys on CCTV,” he said.

The former AFDA Film Academy student reportedly had four bags, however thieves stole the bag containing his equipment.

W/O Tito Singh, spokesman for King Shaka SAPS, confirmed a case of theft had been opened.

“There is CCTV footage of the thieves and we are currently still investigating the matter. No arrests have yet been made,” he said.

Colin Naidoo, manager of communications for King Shaka International urged the public to be aware of their surroundings.

“At any public place people have to be very aware of their surroundings and those around them when they are in a public place like the airport or even at a car rental. We urge people to keep their personal belongings close them at all times and report any suspicious activity or parcels. While at the airport we encourage people that are departing to arrive earlier so that they are able conduct the necessary airport activities before they have to board.

“On arrival it is important that passengers keep their baggage and personal property with them at all times. Airport users are also encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the airport police, information counter or security check point. It is rapidly coming up to the festive season where there is a hive of activity at the airport with people travelling and we cannot stress more for people to more vigilant with their luggage and personal belongings”.
