Uber SA steps up security measures

Dashcams and panic buttons are just some of the trail efforts rolled out by the company.

THE mobile ride-sharing application company, Uber, has implemented several new security features in an attempt to protect its commuters, following two recent attacks on customers in Gauteng.

Not only have developers made improvements to the application itself, but they have also launched a panic button in Johannesburg and a dashcam in Cape Town.

Commuters will now be able to ensure that they are getting into the right vehicle, by cross-checking the name and photo of the driver along the type, colour and licence plate number of the vehicle on arrival.

All Uber vehicles will now be tracked via GPS and commuters will be able to share their estimated time of arrival with friends and family.

What’s more, each vehicle will be fitted with a panic button, which will be linked up to the company’s central community system.

The final initiative is the dashcam project. The cameras will be installed to record inside the vehicle.

The company said they would consider implementing the new features countrywide should they prove successful.
