Contact crime a concern for Durban North

Contact crime such as hijackings and armed robberies have increased in the Durban North and surrounding areas.

AUTHORITIES have expressed concern over a recent spike in ‘contact crime’ in the Durban North and surrounding areas.

According to Brian Jackson, operations manager of Blue Security, they have responded to several incidents in Durban North, La Lucia and Springfield Park.

“Armed robbers and hijackers have targeted both business and residential premises, holding up staff and residents and fleeing with valuables ranging from televisions and computers to cell phones,” he said.

The latest incident occurred on Bhamo Avenue in Avoca where two armed men hijacked the local while he was reportedly fetching his mother from work at 4pm on Friday last week.

Armed robberies have also been reported on Queen Nandi Drive, May Road in Umgeni Park, Rosehill Avenue in Durban North, Intersite Avenue in Springfield Park as well as Shelborne Avenue and Lady Ellen Crescent in La Lucia.

According to Jackson, the criminals primarily strike during the early evenings or late afternoons.

“We advise residents, employees and business owners to be security conscious, especially when arriving and leaving their homes and business premises,” he said.
