Open Letter about government’s Max condoms goes viral

Why not give out free sanitary pads and make them free for those less fortunate asks resident in open letter.

AN open letter in response to department of health’s decision to release new ‘Max’ condoms has gone viral. This week, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa proudly held up newly released condoms in parliament saying the new condoms apparently provide maximum protection, smell better and are silent.

However, Kgomotso Mahlong’s open letter on Facebook is making social media waves. Her post has been shared more than 4 500 times and poses the question, ‘Why free condoms instead of sanitary pads?’

‘Dear department of health,

We acknowledge your efforts in trying to reduce the rate of HIV/AIDS. You introduced free choice condoms, then improved them to flavored ones, and now more improvement on Max condoms (doesn’t make noise, flavored).

I plead with you to consider the disadvantaged girl child who misses school from time to time due to lack of sanitary towels. The girl child who looses her dignity each and every month when she’s on her periods because she uses socks, tissues( the one ply provided at local toilets) , papers and old cloths and ends up being a laughing stock amongst her peers.

Please consider the percentage of girls who dropped out of school because of this cloud on top of their heads not forgetting the consequences that comes with using papers for your menstrual cycle.

I believe if you can afford to improve condoms like you do, you can most certainly afford the provision of free pads at local clinics, schools and toilets.
