WhatsApp’s new privacy settings spark outrage

Accepted WhatsApp’s new privacy settings? Here’s how you can opt out.

HUNDREDS of WhatsApp users blindly accepted the application’s new privacy policy last week, after a recent update was launched. However, they quickly realised their error when privacy advocates condemned the instant messaging service’s (IMS) decision.

With the new update the IMS claimed it wanted “to improve your Facebook ads and products experiences” by sharing users’ account data with Facebook.

While the application clearly stated that it would not share chats and phone numbers with Facebook, many users deleted their WhatsApp accounts and downloaded alternative applications, such as Telegram.

But there are less drastic options said WhatsApp.

Users who have already accepted the new terms, but wish to opt out can do so, but are only given 30 days.

Head to the settings menu in the application and select the account tab. At the bottom of the screen users will find the ‘share my account info’ tab. By clicking on the ticked box you will be able to opt out.

If you have not accepted the new terms and don’t plan on doing so, wait until the pop-up emerges. Don’t click on the agree button, rather select the ‘read more’ option and then untick the box that reads, ‘Share my WhatsApp account information with Facebook’.
