SASSA warns of loan scam

A fraudulent message has been circulating around social media promising grant recipients a R9 000 loan.

THE South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has turned to its official Facebook Page to warn the public of a loan scam doing the rounds on social media.

According to the government organisation, the fraudsters are asking people to send them their names, ID number and bank account number for an approved R9 8500 loan from SASSA.

The message reads: “Good Day. Kindly contact us. Send names, ID num, Acct num to 060 846… for your 99% approval. sendloan@sent.com.”

The agency has declared that it had not distributed the message as it does not offer loans to beneficiaries.

“ We continue to warn social grant recipients to avoid taking loans of any kind as it will lead to deductions on your social grants. Protect your social grant details. Do not give your SASSA card and/or pin to anyone,” the organisation warned.
