Greenwood SAPS secures two convictions

One of the suspects, an arsonist burglar, received a ten year sentence.

THE Greenwood Park SAPS recently secured two successful convictions at the Durban Magistrate’s Court. A burglar and a fraudster were sentenced following the ‘diligent investigations and proper evidence gathering’ of the investigating officers, said station spokesperson W/O  Leon Audh.

The first suspect was found guilty of defeating the course of justice after opening a false case at the station.

“On 11 July 2015 the suspect alleged that he was driving his car on Old North Coast Road and when he stopped at the robots, he was hijacked by three unknown males. The vehicle was later recovered and upon further investigation the perpetrator admitted that he had opened a false case,” said Audh.

He added that the man was later arrested and charged with perjury.

The court sentenced the man to a R4 000 fine or to serve a six month prison sentence, suspended for three years.

Const Mzothule Ngubane was the investigating officer who secured the conviction.

The second suspect was arrested and charged with malicious damage to property, house breaking, theft and arson after he burgled a home on Park Station Road in Greenwood Park, and set the premises alight.

The man was sentenced to a six year imprisonment for arson and an additional four years for house breaking and theft. The sentences are to run concurrently.

Const/ Detective Lungile Zuma investigated the case.
