Missing eMdloti swimmer presumed to have drowned

Still no sign of swimmer dragged under by current.

THE teenager who was swept away by the strong current at eMdloti beach is presumed to have been drowned. A massive search involving members of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), SAPS Search and Rescue, along with other local rescue personnel are looking for the 19-year-old who is down from Johannesburg on holiday.

According to Netcare 911 spokesman, Chris Botha, the search is still ongoing but there has been no sign of the holidaymaker.

“Reports from the scene indicate that two friends from Gauteng went swimming in the sea while the family was sitting on the beach. Both men were caught in the current and swept out to sea.

“Two lifeguards raced out in the treacherous water to rescue the two men. One of the lifeguards got to the one man and secured him with a flotation device but as the other lifeguard got near the teenager, he disappeared under the water and was swept away by the strong current. A search is still ongoing by the SAP Search and Rescue team for the missing man,” he said.
