New president for Rotary Umhlanga

Meet the Rotary Club of Umhlanga’s new President.

The Rotary Club of Umhlanga recently had a fresh new face inducted as its President. Lisa Sukdev (39) said she is hoping to launch new and sustainable projects within the club.

“In the past we have started some incredible projects, such as the ECR Toy Story, Winter Warmers and the Discovery Big Walk, but we are now looking for new and sustainable projects to tackle,” she said.

Recently the public benefit organisation (PBO) established a community centre in Waterloo and built an irrigation system at farms in Newlands and Inanda.

“We also provided the farmers with seeds and training. We not only want the community to be able to feed themselves, but also to create employment opportunities. We want our projects and efforts to add value to future generations,” said the uMhlanga resident.

The mother and businesswoman became involved in the club two years ago after the late father of her partner introduced them to the club.

“It was like I found my home. People in the group are very sociable as well as passionate and committed to their work. They are all prepared to work hard and to get their hands dirty,” she said.

“I think the most common misconception about the rotary club is that it is a group of white elderly men. But that is far from the truth. We have a very dynamic membership – with people from all ages and races,” she said.

The club meets every Tuesday at the Gateway Hotel in Umhlanga Ridge at 6pm for interesting guest speakers (such as craft beer tasting and the uMhlanga/ Cornubia interchange), fellowship and a meal. Anyone is welcome to attend.
