Relief effort rallied in support of Malacca citizens

Three loads of essential items were collected and donated to the residents of Malacca Road Informal Settlement after the heavy rains.

MORE than three loads of food, clothing and other essential items were donated to the residents of the Malacca Road Informal Settlement following the devastation of Monday’s torrential rains.

The heavy rains had not only washed away many of the residents’ belongings, but also flooded their homes, leaving everything soaked and covered in mud. For many there was no food and no dry clothes, or even anywhere warm and dry to sleep. One of the residents, Nosipho Nthembo, said she was forced to wear her husband’s shoes as all of hers were washed away.

The relief effort was coordinated by ward 110 candidate councillor, Pete Graham on Tuesday after he heard about the community’s dire need.

“At times like this we must remember that while some have lost a little, others have lost a lot,” he said.

Fortunately many heeded the call and on Wednesday Graham and Arianne Hayes-Hill, pastor at the His Life Vineyard, were able to distribute the donations.

According to Graham, additional stationery, toys and frozen foods are still desperately needed.

“One lady donated R100, which was used to buy crayons and colouring in books for the little ones. Three former Durbanites have also offered to donate funds towards to cause. I’m thrilled to be in a position where the people I am working with are all giving their resources for free, so 100 per cent of what is donated goes to the citizens of Malacca,” he said.

June Smit who owns a shop at 53 Umhlanga Rocks Drive in Durban North has offered her shop as a drop off point for anyone who is interested in assisting.
