La Lucia dancer graces the big leagues

Chelsea Wewege is one of 25 international ballet dancers to be accepted to one of Britain's most prestigious dance schools, the Central School of Ballet.

SHE moves gracefully across the floor as she performs a set from her favourite ballet production, Swan Lake, at the private dance studio at her home in La Lucia. Chelsea Wewege (16), is one of 25 international ballet dancers to be accepted to one of Britain’s most prestigious dance schools, the Central School of Ballet. She will be starting her classes in September this year.

What’s more, Wewege is the only candidate from South Africa to be accepted, she told Northglen News last week.

“I applied at the end of last year, by sending in a video audition. For months I did not get any response. I was devastated as I thought that I did not get in, but then recently I received a message to say that I was accepted. It has been a dream come true,” she said.

At the end of her three-year course, Wewege will receive a BA honours degree in professional dance and performance. The passionate ballerina said she hopes to become a professional dancer and join one of the world’s greatest ballet companies, The Royal Ballet.

“Becoming a professional ballet dancer is something that I have always wanted to do. I started dancing at the age of three. I was always moving. I remember watching Swan Lake being performed by one of the Russian ballet companies. It was beautiful and magical. I knew then and there that that is what I wanted to do,” she said.
